"How tired are you?" I said when Misty answered her cell phone.
"Why?" Misty dragged out the question.
"Because that new man my aunt is dating? He's the mayor of Mount Holly."
"Just tell me where you need me to be." This was why I loved Misty. Everyone needed a best friend like her.
"They're going to dinner at The Grove at six o'clock. I want to keep an eye on them."
"I'll be ready by five-thirty."
"Okay, see you then."
Two hours later, Misty and I sat parked across the street from the restaurant. Aunt Thelma and Frederick had picked a booth right up front, and we could see everything through the window.
"She looks like she's having a good time," Misty remarked from the passenger seat.
"For all we know, she's smiling because he's drugged her," I grumbled.
Misty rolled her eyes. "I agree there's a lot of coincidences right now." I started to cut Misty off, but she plowed on, "And you don't believe in coincidences, but we could be wrong about this." Misty motioned with her head to their table. Mayor Kringle reached across the table for Aunt Thelma's hand. She readily met him halfway.
I sighed. "He could be pretending."
"He could be," Misty agreed. "But why go through all the trouble?"
"Because he needs a cover," But even as I said the words, I wasn't too sure. Mayor Kringle could've rode into town, set off the New Year's Eve curse, and left without staying in town a single night. In fact, that's what he should have done if he was the bad guy. Michael, on the other hand, had no place to go. If he ran, he'd look guilty. It was something to think about.
"Look, but don't look." Misty reached across the center console to stop me from whipping around.
"What, what is it?" I craned my neck to see what I was missing inside the restaurant. Visions of Mayor Kringle attempting to abduct my aunt came to mind, but I realized nothing of the sort was happening when I saw them bent low over a menu. From what I could tell, my aunt had finished dinner, and they were thinking about ordering dessert.
"No, across the street. It's that Megan girl."
"The reporter?" I slowly turned to where Misty was pointing.
"Look, she has binoculars! What is she doing?" Misty looked incredulous.
"Is she staking out the restaurant?" I squinted through the dashboard of Megan's rental. Her car was facing ours on the opposite end of the street.
"I don't know. Maybe she has the same theory as you." Misty raised her eyebrows.
I thought for a moment. "That means, though, if Megan's watching her Mayor, then she didn't set off the curse either."
Misty waved her head from side to side. "I suppose you're right."
"I think I should talk to her."
Misty looked over her shoulder. "Well, that's good because she's headed this way."
"She's what?!" I jumped back in my seat. Sure enough, Megan was making a beeline for our vehicle. She strolled right up to the driver's side window and waved at me through the glass.
